The 42,780 tonne Arkutun Dagi field’s topside for the Berkut (golden eagle) platform jacked up to 24 metres by ALE ready for the installation of the skid track for its load out with strand jacks
International heavy lifting and transport specialist ALE has completed the world record jack up of the Arkutun Dagi Berkuttopside for Exxon Neftegaz Limited at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Company shipyard in South Korea.
At 42,780 tonnes the topside is the heaviest load ever lifting in a jacking operation. The massive piece will be in the Arkutun Dagi field off the east coast of Russia. Arkutun Dagi is the third field in the Sakhalin-1 Consortium’s development. It is forecast that the development will be the largest oil and gas production platform in Russia. Oil production is due to start in 2014.
ALE jacked the topside to a height of 24 metres in what is the first project of this kind for the UK-based company’s Mega Jack system. The Mega Jack was configured in four sets of towers, each one a combination of three towers, giving a capacity of 15,000 tonnes on each of the four corners for a total overall of 60,000 tonnes. Mega Jack is a computerised and stroke-controlled system operated via a control room. It took 11 hours to complete the 24 m lift. A maximum wind speed of 50 m/s was encountered during that time.
After the initial jack up operation, the next phase of work included the installation of a skid frame (DSF), onto which the topside was lowered using the Mega Jack. This operation was completed within a day, ALE said. The next phase will see the topside loaded out onto the DSF in a pulled load out operation, using strand jacks, to a barge for onward transportation to its final destination. In water 35 m deep about 25 km off the coast, the 10 storey tall topside will be installed on its base, a 130 x 100 m concrete gravity based structure (GBS).
Record achievement
Kees Kompier ALE executive director, comments, “This pioneering project is a great achievement for ALE and the Mega Jack which was created by our research and development team and engineers. The load is nearly double the weight of the previous heaviest load which is a great accomplishment for the company and really shows the capabilities of the Mega Jack. The system itself opens up a whole range of options for our clients and is completely scalable, meaning we can create a system to fit the requirements of projects becoming more flexible in our capacity and solutions.”
The Mega Jack establishes stability from its jacking foundation. As a result enormous bracing structures and welding works to the platform for securing stability are unnecessary. It means that welding and cutting works at high level are not required and, therefore, working at height is completely eliminated due to the low level feed-in system for inserting the jacking beams as the Mega Jack operates.
From the central control unit the jack-up operator runs the system via the computerised control system which includes data logging, weather data and optional dimensional surveys.
ALE launched Mega Jack in 2011. It can be configured to lift up to 60,000 tonnes to a height of 25 m and was developed to meet increasing demand from the offshore industry.

Global heavy transport and lifting company ALE has unveiled the second unit of its 4,300 tonne capacity super heavy lifter.

The 190,000 tonne-metre-rated ALE AL.SK190-2 is undergoing testing at the UK-based company's facility in Breda, the Netherlands. It is the same site where the first unit was assembled, tested and first shown in 2008 (IC October 2008, page 15).

As pictured, the boom is 118 m long and the test load is 1,500 tonnes at 65 m outreach. In that configuration it ships in around 130 containers. The main lift, at up to 10 m an hour, is by strand jacks and there is a 600 tonne auxiliary hoist by winch for faster lifting of lighter loads. Following completion of the testing, it will join its older brother for lifts around the world.

SPMT in 7,500 tonne deck move by ALE(KHL)

Written by Alex Dahm - 06 Sep 2010

ALE used 320 lines of SPMT to move and load out a 7,500 tonne deck for the Buzzard field
ALE used 320 lines of SPMT to move and load out a 7,500 tonne deck for the Buzzard field
ALE in the UK completed the site move and load out of an offshore petrochemical industry deck weighing 7,500 tonnes.
The production sweetening (PS) deck and bridge were part of the Buzzard Field Development Project in Hartlepool. The 7,500 tonne deck was 60 metres by 36 metres by 42 metres. A 500 tonne bridge, 80 metres long, connected the new deck to the existing Buzzard structure.
For the site move 320 lines of self propelled modular transporter (SPMT) were assembled in a separate area adjacent to the site. After the axles were inserted, the module was circled through 90 degrees for the main construction skid beams to be removed. The module was then driven forward about 1 kilometre to the load out site on the quay.
A conflict between the build stool location and the barge grillage location meant that the SPMT had to be inserted and removed to ensure correct positioning on the quayside. As the module was driven onto the barge it was ballasted before being positioned prior to sea fastening for transport.
Installation in the Buzzard field offshore was 35 miles from Peterhead in Scotland. It was the second unit ALE has loaded out for the Buzzard field. First was the QU deck with a total load out weight of 11,300 tonnes in 2006.

Tower side loading innovation - KHL Group

Tower side loading innovation - KHL Group

Scheuerle announced plans for an innovative way of loading wind turbine tower sections at April's Bauma exhibition in April.

When delivering tower segments to their place of assembly, portal deck combinations are frequently used. There can be delays, however, due to hold ups with the crane or strong winds, says the manufacturer.

To solve these problems Scheuerle is developing the Side Loader trailer. The system is connected twice between two self-propelled vehicle units which are operated in a loose coupling mode.

The units are positioned independently of each other parallel to the portal deck combination by using a remote control, for example, in front of the flange.

The support legs are folded up hydraulically and the side loader is then lowered and telescoped outwards. After fastening the retaining head to the tower flange, the side loader is raised alongside and telescoped inwards. The tower section is brought up on the self propelled units. Once this has been achieved the portal deck combination is free to leave the jobsite.

The tower section is positioned on prism-like bolsters that are covered with a protective rubber surface. Both units are coupled via a cable meaning it can be operated using one remote control.

KAMAG and SCHEUERLE claim new world record

Reported by www.heavyliftpfi.com

December 8 - As part of a new project, more than 15,000 tonnes of installation equipment was moved on self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) using KAMAG and SCHEUERLE transport technology.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the heaviest load ever to be transported by SPMTs claim the two equipment manufacturers.

The process took place in the Aker Stord shipyard at Leirvik, Norway. The objective was to transport an oil separator installation for the wastewater treatment operations of Aker Solutions from the production plant onto a nearby pontoon.

With three sections, the middle one alone weighing 12,750 tonnes, the oversize dimensions of the separator made it very difficult to transport. The Belgian heavy haulage specialist, Sarens, carried out this part of the project.

KAMAG shipped 356 axle lines of modular transporters and 16 Power Packs to Norway for use in the project, with sister company, SCHEUERLE, providing an additional 184 SPMT axle lines and 6 Power Packs, rented from heavy haulage specialist Mammoet.

The KAMAG and SCHEUERLE modular transporters (SPMTs) were then coupled together electronically and driven using remote control technology under the load, which was then raised to the required driving height, again through the use of remote-controlled operations.

Following a breathtaking 160 m journey from the production plant to the pontoon, precise operations were called for in positioning the enormous three sections of the oil separator installation adjacent to each other.

SCHEUERLE SPMT been tested before delivery for Australia Mining Company

SCHEUERLE transporters for handling 700 tons strip mining excavators
Reported by Transportweekly 22.12.2008 (Pictures from BigLorryBlog)

SCHEUERLE received an order from the company Griffin Coal Mining in Perth, West Australia, to deliver heavy duty transport vehicles for transportation of huge excavators and dumpers, which are used in the coal mining industry. The machines, weighing up to 700 tons, put very special demands on the transporters. After about one year of development and construction the self-propelled transport system, which is based on the successful SCHEUERLE InterCombi series, has now been tested extensively before delivery.

Griffin Coal Mine is one of the biggest strip mining companies in Australia. Approx. 200 kilometres south-eastern of Perth, about 3 million tons of coal is mined annually. Already during the beginning of the Australian industrialisation, the Griffin Coal Mine played an important role by supplying to the national railway company. By now Griffin Coal Mine Company is one of the major subcontractors of the West-Australian energy sector, that operates several energy producing power plants with coal from the so-called „Colli Basins“.
If additional coal fields are to be made accessible to secure future energy supplies, massive excavators and dumpers also have to be relocated to this new site. However, a strip mining excavator, which can weigh up to 700 tons, is not designed for covering long distances. For this reason Griffin Coal Mine Company placed an order with SCHEUERLE to develop a powerful transport system.
This system is based on the successful SCHEUERLE heavy duty transport vehicles of the “InterCombi” series. Four 6-axle modules and two 2-axle modules can be coupled with one another depending on the load. 20 of a total of 56 pendulum axles possess a hydrostatic drive. To assure the traction drive, these axles are charged with pressure oil by two Power-Pack Units (PPUs). Also fed by the Power-Pack Units are the steering cylinder and the axle compensation cylinder, which position the vehicle platform for loading and unloading accordingly and ensure the necessary axle compensation while driving at ground unevenness. The transport combination is controlled by a radio remote control unit. Via joy-stick all important functions like forward and backward gear as well as the steering can be handled. If the transport of a huge excavator is operated, the vehicle combinations can be coupled side-by-side with 14 axle lines each and connected with distance bearings. The combination is lowered at rear and raised at front: A drive-up bevel is formed, which enables the excavator to navigate onto the platform trailers from behind. The distance between the ground and the platform elevation at rear is bridged with drive-up wedges. When the excavator has reached its scheduled position, the transport system of Intercombi vehicles will be levelled back to drive elevation. With the hydrostatic-driven SCHEUERLE heavy duty transport combination, the West Australian customer Griffin Coal Mine Company receives a very flexible transport system, which enables an efficient, fast and reliable transport of heavy machines or ulterior equipments of strip mining companies.

Goldhofer Mega PST

Goldhofer leads with trailer

For the first time since 1984, there is a new design of self-propelled modular trailer (SPMT). German trailer manufacturer Goldhofer's so-called mega PST can carry single axle loads of 50t.
"This is a completely new area in heavy transport," Goldhofer managing director Stefan Fuchs told Cranes Today at the April SC&RA annual conference in Florida. "Nobody thought of an improvement. Nobody was thinking of the possibilities."
Sales director Horst Haefele says: "Our strategy is not to copy the market, but to make something better. This trailer has some improvements compared to the regular SPMT, which has a gross capacity of 30t-40t." He added that its new trailer's 50t gross capacity comes with a 20% safety factor. Goldhofer intends to sell it for special transport uses in industrial environments such as shipyards and power plants. The transporter is too heavy to be used on most roads.
The Mega-PST is Goldhofer's first SPMT that is slim enough (2.4m or 94in) to fit inside a standard container. Its predecessor, the electronically-controlled PST-E range, is 3m (118in) wide.
Despite its greater loading capacity, the SPMT manages to achieve lower ground-bearing pressure when loaded because it drives with much larger wheels: 385 tyres on 22in (559 mm) diameter rims instead of 355 tyres on 12in (300 mm) rims. Tyre pressures have increased slightly; the PST range requires pressures of 147 PSI (10 bar); the new model 191 PSI (13 bar). This model is the first SPMT to diverge from 355 tyres, the company says.
The platform sits 1.5m (60in) above the ground and can hydraulically raise or lower by a total of 350mm (13 3/4in).
Each line runs on four wheels, divided between two side-by-side steerable axle units. Axles are spaced 1.6m (63in) apart. The units can be hooked side by side and to rear. The trailers come in units with three, four, five and six lines.
Power packs slimmed down to 2.4m width for these trailers produce power output ranging from 155kW to 360kW. The power packs comply with Euro 3, EPA Tier 3 and CARB 3 (California Air Resources Board) air quality regulations.
Three customers have already ordered 100 axle lines; Berard Transportation of Louisiana, and shipbuilders Nippon Express and affiliated transport firm UTOC of Japan. Another customer was not named.
The first trailer has already been tested and will be delivered in July. Haefele said that the development process has taken a year. Delivery times for new orders range from between one and two years.
Although there are only four manufacturers, Scheuerle, Kamag and Goldhofer of Germany, and Cometto of Italy, the total annual production of SPMTs is roughly between 1,000 and 2,500 units per year. Haefele said that Goldhofer makes between 500-800 per year, and estimated the total production capacity of SPMTs as slightly more than 1,000 lines. Bernd Schwengsbier, president of the Tii Group, which includes Scheuerle and Kamag, estimated their annual production capacity alone at 1,500 units."

Mammoet buys 650 modular trailer axle lines

Netherlands-based heavy lifting firm Mammoet has placed a huge order for 650 self-propelled modular trailer axle lines of SPMT from German manufacturers Scheuerle and Kamag.
The order, placed in 2007, includes some power packs. It will be delivered in 2008 and 2009, Mammoet said.
Mammoet will use the extra lines to expand the fleet, and is not planning to use them for any particular job.
It will receive 592 lines from Scheuerle and 50 from Kamag, said Bernd Schwengsbier, president of parent company Transporter Industry International sales. TII convinced Mammoet to switch 50 lines to Kamag because of production bottlenecks at Scheuerle.
He said that Scheuerle has a two-year waiting list for new SPMTs, despite having tripled capacity to more than 1,200 lines per year.
Fabricators can save money by assembling larger and larger units. Last year, Sarens' Norwegian subsidiary Transrig assembled 452 SPMT axle lines to lift a single 10,000t offshore platform topsides.

ALE plans demo of 4,300t capacity crane in September

Abnormal Load Engineering is planning to demonstrate the first crane it has ever made, the 4,300t (4,740 US ton) capacity SK 90 at a customer event in Breda, Netherlands in September.

The crane will have a maximum boom length of 148m (486ft) main boom and 48m (157ft) backmast. It can lift rated capacity using four strand jacks mounted at the boom tip, a similar arrangement to Mammoet's MSG 80 crane, which has a maximum capacity of 3,070t. It can lift 600t with a winch with 10 parts of line.

Like other very heavy cranes, it slews by turning around a large modular ring that is set up outside its lower structure. But unlike some other ring cranes, it can operate with only a section of a complete ring assembled.

The crane raises maximum load with 4,000t of counterweight. Its maximum load-moment is 96,000tm. A 120,000tm model is also planned.

The crane is intended for large petrochemical jobs, ALE director Roger Harries explained to Cranes Today.

"We have found uses in the Middle East for large construction projects, where the large load moment capability has an advantage over the current ring designs as it does not sterilize the foundation area of the construction plot. It has changed a lot of the thinking concerning construction techniques of new plants."

He added: "There are many other application where the capacity of the crane allows engineers to build more efficient process plant."

As of mid-August, the prototype was still being assembled. Testing begins at the end of the month.

Gas Turbine Transport After The Earthquake

June 3th, 2008. DEC Launches its first Gas Turbine transport with a 3 files hydraulic modular trailer, produced by Hubei Tiandi Heavy duty Industrial Group, after being stopped on its journey by the The Wenchuan Earthquake happened in May 12th, 2008, Sichuan Province, West China.

The Gas Turbine is 13.8m length, 5.8m width, 5.6m height, and 380t weight, costs 270 million RMB. When the "5.12" earthquake happened, It was just on its journey to the Leshan Port, where the ship will take it to Putian, Fujian Province, South East China. After the first worst 8.0 magnitude earthquake finished, the 380t Gas Turbine still tightly sat on the hydraulic modular trailer, since to the trailer's excellent hydraulic platform balance system. Concerning about the road and bridges in front may be destroyed during the earthquake, the Gas Turbine was stopped in the Huaqiao toll station nearby. After finish nearly two weeks' inspecition of 144 bridges and fix 9 hidden troubles of the road and bridges, the 380t Gas Turbine starts its journey again.

DEC is one of the worst hit enterprise in the "5.12" earthquake. Thousands of workers were injoured and dead, Almost all the infrastructures were totally destroyed. The direct ecnomic losses have reached over 5 billion RMB. However, the re-launch of the 380t Gas Turbine shows the world an un-clobbered DEC and also shows DEC's steady confidence of recovery from the disaster.

SPMT - Self Propelled Modular Transporter

A Self Propelled Modular Transporter (SPMT) is a platform vehicle with a large array of wheels on the bottom. They are used for transporting massive objects such as bridges, oil refining equipment, huge motors, large bridge sections, and other objects that are too big or heavy for trucks. These vehicle may also be called a Self Propelled Modular Trailer.

SPMTs are increasingly used in the construction and oil industries, and have been recently begun to be used to replace bridge spans, in the United States and Europe, and more recently, Canada.

A typical SPMT can have a grid of several dozen computer-controlled wheels, all individually controllable and steerable, in order to evenly distribute weight and steer accurately. Each individual wheel can swivel independently from other wheels, to allow the SPMT to turn, move sideways, or even spin in place. Some SPMTs allow each wheel to telescope independently of each other, so that the load can be kept flat and evenly distributed while moving over uneven terrain. As SPMTs often carry the world's heaviest loads on wheeled vehicles, they are very slow vehicles, often moving at under one mile per hour while fully loaded. Some SPMTs are controlled by a worker with a hand held control panel, while other SPMTs have a driver cabin. In addition, multiple SPMTs can be combined to transport massive building-sized objects.

SPMTs have also been featured on Discovery Channel during shows involving engineering.

Normal load/axle-line: 22.5tons or 32.5tons.
Drive type: Hydrostatics
Steering type: Normal linkage steering (first wheel max. steering angle 55-60degree) or independant steering (also called e-multi steering. all wheels +/- 115 to 135degree or even 360degree steering).

Different Combination Mode of SPMT

Multiple combination with central remote control
